Searches of foundations linked to Zbigniew Ziobro and Przemyslaw Wipler rightly raise the stakes in the Zondacrypto case. They do not establish wrongdoing, but they move the issue beyond the company itself and toward transparency in the financing of political networks.
On 30 October, investigators handling the Zondacrypto case searched the premises of Instytut Polski Suwerennej, linked to former justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro, and Dobre Panstwo, a foundation linked to MP Przemyslaw Wipler. Anna Adamiak, spokesperson for the prosecutor general, confirmed the action to Polsat News. TVN24 had earlier reported that both foundations were being searched.
The reported fact is that the searches are under way and concern organisations that received funds from the Zondacrypto exchange. That is a meaningful threshold. Donations to entities connected with politicians require answers not only about formal legality, but also about purpose, disclosure and whether political connections can weaken public scrutiny.
What the available reporting does not establish matters just as much. A search is not proof that either foundation, Ziobro or Wipler committed an offence. The supplied reports do not identify charges, the amounts involved, the use of the money or investigators' findings that any payments were unlawful. The strongest case against drawing a political conclusion now is that prosecutors may simply be securing records needed to test transactions that could initially appear lawful.
That caveat does not remove the need for openness. It reinforces it. Where an investigation reaches foundations connected to a sitting MP and a former justice minister, the public interest lies in documents and accountable explanations, not partisan assertions. Prosecutors should clarify what the searches concern and what questions they are examining. The foundations should clearly set out the basis for, and use of, the funds they received.
The next test is whether prosecutors say the material secured indicates a breach of law or only requires further examination.
