President Karol Nawrocki’s visit to Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal crossed a line that cannot be excused as part of an ordinary dispute over judicial appointments. Reports say that on Friday night he forced his way into the court building, which demonstrators had surrounded, using physical force and pushing a female judge down. That is a display of power in a place where procedure, not physical pressure, must decide disputes.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the episode on Saturday as an attack on democracy and the rule of law. That is a political allegation, not a judicial finding. But his underlying point is defensible: politicians cannot resolve a conflict over the judiciary by personally pressuring judges inside a court. Tagesschau reports that video published on social media by a Constitutional Tribunal judge showed Nawrocki entering the building forcefully.
The confrontation sits within a longer institutional dispute. According to Tagesschau, the PiS government, in office from 2015 to 2023, appointed judges close to it while disregarding earlier nominations; the European Court of Human Rights found that approach unlawful in 2021. Since taking office in 2023, Tusk has sought to reverse contested appointments. Nawrocki, whose 2025 election was substantially supported by PiS according to the report, has blocked the swearing-in of new judges.
That history is precisely why the latest incident matters. Both camps can point to a genuine dispute over the tribunal’s institutional legitimacy. This is the strongest case against treating the conflict as legally simple or politically one-sided. Yet an unresolved appointments dispute does not justify intimidation or physical pressure on judges. Anyone claiming to defend the rule of law must accept verifiable procedures, especially at a constitutional court.
It remains unclear whether the incident will be formally investigated and whether Nawrocki will continue blocking new appointments. Those are the next tests of whether Poland can move this conflict back into institutional channels.
