The immediate test after the Urda rail disaster is not whether ministers can settle on a political narrative. It is whether Adif will account for a specific piece of infrastructure governance: why a Hitachi extension to complete ERTMS deployment on the affected section was absent from its transparency records, as reported by El Mundo.
That question has become more pressing as the human consequences remain acute. El Mundo reports that forensic teams have identified 57 of the 69 people killed through fingerprints and DNA, while 12 remained missing. Those figures demand care in assigning responsibility: the available material does not show that investigators have determined the crash’s cause, nor does it establish that the contract extension caused the collision.
Technical uncertainty, however, is not an excuse for administrative silence. El Mundo has also reported that the Iryo driver issued two warnings before the impact and asked why the catastrophe was not prevented. These are reported claims, not findings by an official inquiry. The supplied material also contains no direct response from Adif or Hitachi to the report about the extension. Even so, they identify checkable questions about signalling, maintenance, traffic control and risk handling that should not be deferred until a final report.
According to elDiario.es, Transport Minister Óscar Puente said he could not explain how the event happened and offered his resignation to Pedro Sánchez, who did not accept it. Reducing the matter to Puente’s tenure would be inadequate. Political accountability does not mean declaring technical blame before the evidence is in. It means preserving records, disclosing relevant decisions and allowing the operational chain to be reconstructed.
The strongest counterargument is valid: an extension in one contract does not prove a system failure or explain 69 deaths. That is exactly why the appropriate demand is for documents and traceability, rather than causal speculation or silence.
The next issue is concrete: will Adif publish the full extension file and clarify which systems were operational, what warnings control received and which protocols were followed before impact?
