After the first 13 days, 2,091,269 voters had cast an early ballot in Sweden’s 2026 election, according to preliminary Election Authority statistics. This is 32 per cent more than at the same point in 2022. Early voting continues through election day on 13 September, but queues may grow as the date approaches.

What happened?

Early voting began on 26 August. By the authority’s 8 September report, almost 2.1 million votes had been registered, compared with just under 1.6 million at the equivalent point in the 2022 election. The comparison covers the same part of the voting period, not the final total from either election.

There are 1,875 early-voting venues across the country. A voter can use any such venue, regardless of where in Sweden it is located, and early voting remains possible through election day. Opening hours vary and should be checked in the Election Authority’s venue search.

Impact and significance

The increase may put more pressure on venues during the final days. The Election Authority advises voters to allow enough time so a queue does not prevent them from voting. This does not mean that early voting closes before election day.

The figure measures received early votes registered in the digital electoral list. It gives no information about how votes are distributed between parties and cannot be treated as an early election result.

Background

The statistics are preliminary. Votes can be received when a venue has no internet connection and entered digitally later. There may therefore be a delay between a voter casting a ballot and its appearance in the total.

The authority publishes figures by day and voting venue. As further registrations arrive, the total for an earlier point can change. The reported 32 per cent increase was the comparison available when the release was published.

Latest update

The latest confirmed figure in the release is 2,091,269 registered early votes after 13 days. Whether the increase will continue through the final days remains unknown. The authority’s running statistics provide the next update, while the election result comes only after votes are counted.
