Borås expects 4,000–4,500 ballots in Wednesday count, three times the 2022 level

Borås election committee expects about 4,000–4,500 ballots in the collection count on 16 September, compared with 1,384 in 2022. These are mainly advance votes that did not reach voters' polling stations on election day and overseas ballots. Counting starts at 09:00 in City Hall and is public.

What happened?

The collection count, commonly called the Wednesday count, handles ballots that could not be counted at polling stations on election night. Borås says 4,000–4,500 ballots are waiting, roughly three times the 1,384 processed in the 2022 election.

During election day, discrepancies were noted between registered and delivered advance votes. Additional ballots were collected during the night with help from local postal staff and municipal employees so they could enter the continuing count.

Location

Borås, Västra Götalands län

Impact and significance

The large number means election-night results may be supplemented by an unusually high volume of valid ballots. It does not by itself mean the ballots were missing or lost; the system has a specific stage for advance and overseas ballots reaching the correct district late. Materials are reviewed and preliminary assessments made before the public count.

If margins between parties or seats are narrow, additional ballots may affect the provisional position. Final conclusions should therefore await the county board's checks and confirmation.

Background

Borås received a total of 41,883 advance votes, more than at any previous election according to the municipality. Numerous voting locations and broad geographic coverage are cited as making advance voting accessible. The total received should not be confused with the 4,000–4,500 remaining for Wednesday.

Counting is public as part of electoral transparency. Visitors may observe but do not carry out assessment or counting.

Latest update

The collection count starts at 09:00 on Wednesday 16 September in the municipal executive committee's main chamber at City Hall, Kungsgatan 55. The election office is preparing for the larger volume. Figures reported afterwards still form part of the route to a final established result and may change after further checks.
