Motala swimming pool is asking visitors to shower thoroughly with soap and without swimwear before entering the pool. When more dirt and microorganisms enter the water, more chlorine is needed. The municipality has therefore gathered practical hygiene guidance for adults, children and carers.
What happened?
The municipality says an increasing number of visitors skip the shower despite signs in the facility. The basic rule is to wash the entire body thoroughly with soap and water before putting on swimwear. Hair should be rinsed, make-up removed, and hair clips or ties taken out. People with long hair can use a swimming cap; disposable caps are available at the entrance.
Clean swimwear should be worn in the pool. The facility advises against underwear and cotton clothing while swimming. The guidance therefore concerns both showering and the clothing taken into the water.

Every swimmer introduces microorganisms into the pool. Chlorine is used for disinfection and, according to the municipality, more is required when visitors have not washed or wear underwear beneath swimwear. A thorough shower reduces the burden on water treatment and helps limit the amount of chlorine that must be added.
The municipality also explains that the characteristic chlorine smell on the body after swimming is associated with a visitor not being sufficiently clean before entering. The message is not to stop chlorination, but that good hygiene makes it easier to maintain the desired water quality.
Background
Young children should wear swimming pants or a swim nappy that fits closely around the legs and stomach. Nappies should not be changed beside the pool, and regular toilet breaks are recommended during longer visits.
If an accident occurs in the water, staff should be told immediately so the pool can be closed for cleaning. Reporting it straight away is therefore a practical part of the hygiene routine and allows staff to respond.
