Nacka is testing AI control of heating and ventilation at Myrsjöskolan, Eklidens skola and Järla skola. After nine months, the municipal property unit projects annual cost savings of almost SEK 600,000. The project continues until June 2027, so these remain interim pilot results.
What happened?
The three schools together account for around ten per cent of the energy used in the 195 buildings managed by Nacka Municipality. The system uses weather forecasts and information about how the buildings react to changes in weather to adjust indoor temperature and airflow.
The pilot began in late 2025. Its target was to cut energy use and costs by 10–15 per cent a year, corresponding to estimated savings of SEK 180,000–275,000. After nine months, the municipality says the outcome is almost twice the percentage target and operating costs appear likely to fall by close to SEK 600,000 a year.

Impact and significance
The property unit says no additional sensors or other new technical equipment were required. Instead, the control layer was added to and fine-tuned existing heating and ventilation systems. According to the municipality’s calculation, that has shortened estimated payback from 2.5–4 years to just over one year.
The figures concern these three schools and are based on the first nine months. They do not prove that the same savings can automatically be repeated in every municipal building. The characteristics of each building and final results from the full project period still matter.
Background
The municipality describes the technology as learning how the buildings respond and making adjustments faster than a manual operating process, while maintaining an even and comfortable indoor climate. The notice does not, however, provide separate measurements for temperature, air quality or each individual school.
The pilot is part of Smart stad Nacka, a programme covering digitalisation, collaboration and innovation in municipal buildings and public spaces. Nacka’s overall goal is to be climate-positive and circular by 2040.
Latest update
The project will not conclude until June 2027. Once final results have been compiled, the property unit intends to assess whether the approach can become a model for more buildings. The published figures should therefore be read as the municipality’s current projection, not a finally verified annual saving across the whole estate.
