Two drones entered Romanian airspace in the north-east without authorisation, while the authorities' public response focused on the professionalism of the air force crews. That response is necessary but incomplete: an incident serious enough to trigger civilian alerts requires an account of detection, warning, intervention and responsibility as well.
Foreign Minister Dan Neculăescu said on Saturday that Romanian Air Force pilots had reacted “promptly and professionally” after the two drones entered. He linked rapid-response capability to Romania's contribution to allied defence and “NATO 3.0”, according to Digi24 and HotNews.
The reported facts show that this was an operational response, not merely political language. The Defence Ministry said radar systems detected one aerial target 10 kilometres from the border with Moldova, followed by another target entering from the Moldovan direction. HotNews reported that two F-16s and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter took off from Fetești, while two more F-16s took off from Câmpia Turzii. RO-Alert messages began in Iași at 17:04 and later reached Neamț, Vaslui, Botoșani, Bacău and Suceava.
Those warnings and aircraft deployments are the strongest case for the government's claim that it acted. On an airspace frontier exposed to risks from the neighbouring war, rapid action matters and should not be dismissed.
But the editorial judgment is that praise for the response cannot settle the matter. Confirmation of an unauthorised incursion raises separate questions: what route did the drones take, for how long were they tracked, were they intercepted, what actions were possible, and who bears responsibility? The available reports do not establish the drones' origin, any damage, the outcome of the intervention, or the conclusions of an investigation. They also contain no Russian response.
The next development to watch is whether the authorities publish those operational details and a clear assessment of the incident, rather than stopping at the assertion that the crews acted professionally.
