Mörbylånga plans to open Sandåsgården in Färjestaden in April 2027 while changing the roles of Rönningegården and Äppelvägen. The two existing homes will be dedicated to dementia care. Short-term care moves from Rönningegården to Sandåsgården, which will also provide dementia, nursing-care and respite places.

What happened?

Sandåsgården will be organised over three floors. The ground floor will have 12 dementia places, the second floor 24 nursing-care places, and the third floor 12 short-term care places plus 12 nursing-care places including respite care. This totals 60 stated places with different functions.

When the new home opens, short-term care at Rönningegården will close and move to Färjestaden. Rönningegården will be renovated as a home consisting solely of dementia departments. Äppelvägen will also be converted entirely to dementia places.

Location

Mörbylånga, Färjestaden, Kalmar län

Impact and significance

The municipality aims to increase dementia-care capacity and give each home a clearer role. At Rönningegården, the corridor currently running between departments will be removed to create more coherent, calm and purpose-designed environments.

Concentrating short-term care at Sandåsgården is also justified by more stable staffing and improved recruitment opportunities in Färjestaden. This is the municipality's planning assessment; the notice does not yet report outcomes for staffing, waiting lists or care quality.

Background

Special housing covers different support needs. Dementia places, permanent nursing-care places, short-term places and respite care serve different functions, so the allocation should not be described as 60 identical new long-term places. Several places relate to services being moved or given a new role.

The changes affect both new and existing premises. The municipality plans to implement them alongside Sandåsgården's opening, but the detailed timetable for each renovation and service move is still being finalised.

Latest update

Sandåsgården is planned to open in April 2027. Affected services and employees will receive more information as delivery and scheduling are finalised. The next important updates are a confirmed opening date, the renovation sequence and how residents and relatives will be affected by moves. The municipality has not yet published a consolidated capacity comparison before and after the change. Future figures for net additions, occupancy and staffing should therefore be checked once planning is complete.
