Rodengymnasiet pupils join planning work for the new Vätövägen

Second-year pupils on Rodengymnasiet's technology programme will use the Vätövägen redevelopment as a real design and construction project. Cooperation begins this autumn with lectures and study visits. After New Year, pupils will work in groups from the municipal feasibility study and design programme, but no completion date for the road has been decided.

What happened?

Norrtälje Municipality is planning to rebuild Vätövägen between Västra vägen and Långgarnsvägen. The project manager is now working with Rodengymnasiet teachers in art, design, construction and CAD. Pupils will follow the process from sketching to construction and encounter the regulations and participants shaping a public road project.

The autumn introduction consists of lectures and study visits. After New Year, pupils will work more independently in groups, using the municipality's feasibility study and design programme.

The municipal art gallery is involved through the officer responsible for public art. Pupils' sketches may potentially influence the final result, but the source does not promise that any particular pupil proposal will be built.

Location

Norrtälje, Stockholms län

Impact and significance

The partnership gives pupils a task with a real location, users and constraints. It can make questions about target users, road users, design and competing regulations tangible in the classroom. The municipality may also gain perspectives from young people who use the local environment.

However, this is an educational partnership within ongoing planning, not a formal public consultation or decision on the road's design. Normal municipal studies and decisions will determine the redevelopment. Pupils' involvement should therefore be understood as idea development and learning, not responsibility for engineering the scheme.

Background

The municipality has previously involved young people as co-creators in public art projects. It is not yet clear how that element will work for Vätövägen. Teachers highlight the opportunity to demonstrate the complexity of community planning and how requirements can conflict. The project connects the technology programme's design and construction work with local planning.

Latest update

Ongoing studies will develop options for redevelopment, design and scheduling. The municipality notes that pupils are likely to leave upper-secondary school before the road is complete. The nearest milestones are therefore the autumn teaching activities and group work after New Year, not construction start.
