Uddevalla finishes the first helicopter liming and plans a second stage

Author: WUA RadarPublished: Updated: Reviewed:

Uddevalla Municipality limed lakes, waterways and wetlands on Bredfjället and Herrestadsfjället on 13–16 August. A further round is planned later in August. The work is intended to counteract acidification and improve aquatic habitats for fish and crustaceans.

What happened?

The first stage started on August 13 and could last until August 16. Exact spreading location was weather dependent. The lime raises the pH value and neutralizes the acidification effect from sulfur and nitrogen that have been stored in the soil and continue to be leached into the water.

Location

Uddevalla, Bredfjället, Herrestadsfjället

Impact and significance

The municipality's goal is a pH of at least 6 so that species such as perch, pike, roach and crustaceans can live and reproduce. Liming is carried out annually because legacy sulphur and nitrogen deposits continue to affect the water despite lower emissions. The objective and general mechanism are the municipality's description; the page does not show current test series or results after this year's application.

Background

Helicopters are used to reach lakes and wetlands in difficult-to-access terrain. The municipal ecologist is responsible for the liming work. The page links to more information and a spreading plan but does not specify the amount of lime, cost or exact date for the second stage.
