Ystad has broken ground on a major expansion of water and sewer infrastructure in the municipality's southeast. The investment is put at around SEK 500 million. Work is planned in seven phases from 2026 to 2030, providing new connections and increased network capacity.
What happened?
The start was marked on 4 September. The project covers tens of kilometres of pipes, new or modernised pumping stations and reinforcement of the existing network. Work will begin in the west and progress eastwards.
A new main between Ystad and Nybrostrand is intended to increase drinking-water capacity and support further development in areas including Nybrostrand and Köpingebro. The municipality also identifies around 500 properties in Löderups strandbad, rural Kåseberga and Peppinge for connection to the wastewater network. Around 350 properties in Löderups strandbad will gain the option of municipal drinking water.
These are two different types of connection. The figures should not be added to produce a count of unique properties: a property may be affected by both water and sewer provision.

Impact and significance
Timing and charges are central questions for affected owners. The municipality says property connections are mainly involved from phase three, provisionally due to start in 2027. Owners will receive information before work reaches their area. Connected properties pay a connection charge under the applicable water and sewer tariff. The overall project investment therefore does not indicate the cost of an individual connection.
The expansion also changes wastewater treatment. Once the Kåseberga treatment plant is decommissioned, its wastewater will instead go to the Sjöhög plant. The municipality describes treatment there as more advanced and links the change to a lower environmental impact.
Background
Another component is a ring main around Ystad's urban area. It is intended to improve flow balance in the wastewater network, increase capacity and reduce the risk of overflows when flows are high. The municipality thus highlights both new connection opportunities and reinforcement of existing public infrastructure. These improvements are intended project effects, not results from an already completed installation.

The confirmed milestone is the construction start on 4 September. The overall programme is expected to continue through 2030, while the start of phase three remains provisional. Property owners should therefore follow forthcoming area-specific information for their own timing and charges, rather than interpreting the ground-breaking as meaning that all connections are already available.
